Wilshere Targeting England Return

Arsenal star Jack Wilshere is hoping to return to the England squad for the friendlies in March as he targets a place at the World Cup.

The 26-year-old has returned to the first-team frame with Arsenal this season, having started six times, and he netted his first Premier League goal of the season in Wednesday’s 2-2 draw with Chelsea. Gunners boss Arsene Wenger believes Wilshere, who is out of contract over the summer, deserves a recall to the national side. Wenger said: “When was the last time he played for England? Exactly, against Iceland [at Euro 2016], he came on. “Since he has not played for England and I would say that means that everybody had given up on him. Today, nobody would be surprised if he was selected again.” Wilshere has also revealed a desire to force his way into Gareth Southgate’s plans for the World cup in Russia although he insists his current focus remains on performing for his north London club. “I want to be going to Russia, but now is not the time to be thinking about that,” Wilshere said. “I’ve got to take each game as it comes, keep playing in this team, keep improving and we’ll see when March comes and the next international games [arrive].”
