It’s finally here – The January transfer window is now open for business and it could be an interesting month at Arsenal.
Arsene Wenger has already hinted that he will be in the market for new signings during the next few weeks in view to strengthening his squad for the second half of the campaign
“We are out there and look of course to do some things, yes,” said the Arsenal boss. “We will do, but when is very difficult to say because that doesn’t depend only on us.
“We are open in any position for the exceptional player who can give us a plus.”
So what would a perfect January be at the Emirates? Is it about signing new players, or keeping existing ones?
We asked our Arsenal writer Charles Watts for his views. Here’s what he had to say.
Sell Alexis Sanchez
I’m probably going to get grief for this one, but I really think if a decent offer comes in for Alexis then Arsenal should just accept it and move on.
During the summer I was adamant Sanchez should stay and that it would have been disastrous for Arsenal to have sold him. But I’ll hold my hands up, I was wrong on that.
Sanchez simply has not cut it this season. His contribution has been poor and his goals have dried up, even if he has scored three in his last four games. Right now it’s looking like a huge mistake not selling him in the summer when City put £60m on the table.
If the Premier League leaders come back in with another bid this month then I really do think it’s best to just take the money and get rid. There are reports they may offer £50m, if that is the case then Arsenal should bite their hands off.
Sanchez is going to go in the summer, that’s clear. So they may as well get some money in for him now to help with buying a replacement.
Sign Riyad Mahrez
If Sanchez does go, then Arsenal will need a replacement. They tried to get Thomas Lemar in the summer but couldn’t manage it and it’s unlikely they will get him in January.
For me, they should put all their efforts into getting either Riyad Mahrez or Nabil Fakir from Lyon. The France international has been excellent this season and would help fill the void left by Sanchez.
He scores goals, he makes goals and he knows exactly how to get the best out of Alexandre Lacazette. It would be the perfect signing.
The same goes for Mahrez, who is showing once again how good he is. The Algeria international is scoring goals, creating them and looks back to his best.
Agree free transfer deal for Goretzka
Leon Goretzka is now officially able ti talk to clubs outside the Bundesliga about a move.
The Schalke midfielder is out of contract in the summer and is one of Europe’s hottest properties, with the likes of Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Liverpool all chasing him.
But Arsenal are in the race and so they should go all out to strike a deal for the German international.
They can offer excellent wages – as they proved by winning the race for Sead Kolasinac last year – and they also have the lure of London on their side.
Some reports suggest Goretzka favours Liverpool, if that is the case Arsenal should do everything they can to persuade him to reject a move to Anfield.
Arsene Wenger should make sure he is at the front of the queue banging Goretzka’s door down.
Tie down Mesut Ozil and Jack Wilshere
Getting Mesut Ozil to sign a new contract would arguably be the best signing Arsenal could make in January.
There have been whispers that Arsenal are growing confident they could yet tempt Ozil to stay – If that is the case then they should do everything they can to get the deal done.
Offers from rival clubs could well arrive when the window opens – but Arsenal should knock them all back and focus purely on getting a new contract sorted for the former Real Madrid man.
Giving Jack Wilshere a new deal also has to happen. Arsenal should not consider letting him move on.
Improve the defence
Arsenal’s defence is an area that Arsene Wenger must be looking to improve, if not now then in the summer.
Per Mertesacker is retiring at the end of the season, Laurent Koscielny’s Achilles is not going to get any better, Naco Monreal is not getting any younger and Shkodran Mustafi has been injury plagued since he arrived.
Rob Holding and Calum Chambers are two talented young centre-backs, but Arsenal need some more established experience brought in at centre-back.
Jonny Evans is a good option and looks certain to leave West Brom this month. There are other players out there as well and Wenger should be banging their door down in January.
